Owing to this story, as well as the village's roots in early American history and folklore, Sleepy Hollow is considered by some to be one of the "most haunted places in the world". The village is known internationally through " The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", an 1820 short story about the local area and its infamous specter, the Headless Horseman, written by Washington Irving, who lived in Tarrytown and is buried in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Originally incorporated as North Tarrytown in the late 19th century, in 1996 the village officially adopted the traditional name for the area. The population of the village at the 2020 census was 9,986. To the south of Sleepy Hollow is the village of Tarrytown, and to the north and east are unincorporated parts of Mount Pleasant. The village is located on the east bank of the Hudson River, approximately 30 miles (48 km) north of New York City, and is served by the Philipse Manor stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line. It is a great setting for a romantic dinner. He uses Hudson Valley produce to create a unique dining experience. Chef Dale Talde created Goosefeather as a place for upscale Cantonese food with a modern twist. Technically in Tarrytown, Goosefeather is a short drive from Sleepy Hollow. Also on site, the Blue Hill Café and Grain Bar is less expensive and much easier to get into. You’ll need to make a reservation well in advance to get a table. We recommend taking a tour of the farm while you’re there. Instead, you’ll experience a multi-course feast chosen by the chef based on what produce is currently in season. Blue Hill At Stone Barnsįor an upscale farm-to-table experience, try Blue Hill at Stone Barns (in 2019, Michelin gave it two stars). J.P.’s is walking distance from Sleepy Hollow Cemetery and Philipsburg Manor. It’s also a sports bar, so if you must watch a game while in Sleepy Hollow, this is the place to go. Pro Tip: The cemetery is very large, approximately 90 acres. You’ll also find memorials for Civil War soldiers. In addition to Irving, the cemetery is the final resting place for a number of historical figures, including Andrew Carnegie, Samuel Gompers, Elizabeth Arden, and Brooke and Vincent Astor. If you visit during the month of October, you will likely find throngs of young people in costumes in the cemetery. Don’t expect to get too close to Irving’s grave, though - it is protected by a fence.
